Mam Tor, the "Shivering Mountain" in Derbyshire's Peak District, rises 517 meters. Famous for its landslides and geological features, it offers breathtaking views of the Hope Valley. The summit hosts remnants of an Iron Age hill fort, attracting hikers and history enthusiasts.
There's plenty of compositions and interests to photograph on Mam Tor. The favourite is the gate which is located on the great ridge (15 minute walk from the trig point) There's the path leading down to the great ridge. If your'e lucky then you may get a cloud inversion with Hollins cross, Back Tor and Lose Hill sticking out of the mist!
My favourite time to photograph Mam Tor is between April / June for when the sun rises above the great ridge. This can look dramatic if you're photographing the rocks past the gate. Winter months, the sun rises to the right of Hope Valley giving nice sidelight on Mam Tor.
Mam Nick Car Park - S33 8WA
This car park is a handy location as its only 25 minute walk up to the trig point. It's ran by National Trust, so its free to members, otherwise £7 all day . Don't park on the main road as you'll get a parking ticket!
If you're feeling adventurous then you can park in Castleton and walk up the broken road or Winnats Pass to Mam Tor and loop back.
