Over Owler Tor is a prominent gritstone outcrop in Derbyshire. Known for its distinctive weathered rock formations, it offers panoramic views of the surrounding moorlands and valleys. Popular with walkers and photographers, it's a serene, scenic spot.
There's a few compositions from Owler Tor. This is a good location in the late summer months for Sunrise and sunset. There are some distinguished rocks (mother cap, Honey Pot). These are great to capture when the heather is out or in a deep frost. There's a nice millstone just further along that looks towards Higger Tor. If you park at Surprise View car park then make sure you take in the views overlooking Hope Valley from Millstone edge.
As mentioned above. The best time to visit this location is late July, August and September. The heather is in bloom and the sun rises to the right over Burbage. In the summer, the sun sets left into Hope Valley. Winter Sunrise is a good time to visit this location, particularly after a deep frost. The fern and dead heather looks really cool in a frost.
Surprise View Car Park is the easiest place to park to access this location - S32 1DA. This is a pay and display location and is managed by Peak District National Park. Please note this car park is closed over Saturday and Sunday night (bollards)
Once parked up, there's footpaths left or right that follow up to Owler Tor. This is a good car park if you want to do a circular including Owler Tor, Carl Wark, Higher Tor and Stanage Edge
