The Roaches, a rugged gritstone escarpment in Staffordshire, features striking rock formations, dramatic cliffs, and panoramic views. Popular with hikers and climbers, this area is known for its heather-covered moorlands, unique wildlife, and ancient myths.
There are several compositions to capture at the Roaches. These include sunrise / sunset shots! The iconic shot at sunrise is to capture the jagged rocks sticking out at the top of the steps at Roaches with Hen cloud in the background. A great location when there's mist or snow. The other well known shot is the Roach End barn. This is a sunset shot. One of my favourite shots in the peaks. Both these compositions are so easy to get to.
Although this location is good all year round, August - September is a fantastic time to visit. There is a lot of heather at this location and it looks amazing when it is in bloom. At the same time you could get a chance of capturing an inversion creeping towards Hen Cloud / The Roaches.
The best spot for parking is ST13 8UB. This is a road that stretches for nearly 2 miles. Please park in the lay byes designated for Cars and avoid parking in the bus spaces. This stretch is monitored by parking attendants. To access Roach End Barn then follow the road and you'll go over a cattle grid, there's then car park spaces on the side of the road. Best postcode for thus location is ST13 8UA
